Classic Cocktails Every Bartender Should Know: Negroni

The Negroni is an Italian classic. Invented in 1919 in Florence Italy by Count Camillo Negroni, the gin based apéritif has long since been many bartender’s favorite drink to make. The story goes that Count Negroni asked his favorite bartender, a gentleman named Fosco Scarselli, to make his favorite drink the Americano a little stronger. By adding gin instead of soda water and adding a orange zest instead of the usual garnish of a lemon, the Negroni was born. Named after the Count himself. 

There is another theory that revolves around General Pascal Negroni who came up with the mixture of a third gin, Campari and vermouth while stationed in Paris, France but that theory only appears in two early publications and for the most part is considered the less likely of the two creation stories.

The Recipe: Negroni


  • 1 oz gin
  • 1 oz Campari
  • 1 oz Sweet Vermouth
  • 2 Dashes Orange Bitters
  • ice
  • Orange Zest

Tools and Glassware:

  • Old Fashioned Glass
  • Mixing Glass
  • Strainer
  • Stirring Spoon

How to prepare the drink:

The Negroni is a very easy drink to prepare. Take all of the ingredients and add them to a mixing glass, add ice and stir until the drink is diluted about 20% or around 2 minutes. After, strain the ingredients over fresh ice in an old fashioned cocktail glass. Next, zest the rim of the glass with an orange peel and drop it in the glass. That’s it. Done. Enjoy!
